The Marble Bar Spherule Bed, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, is a remarkable geological formation. It is the result of an asteroid impact strike that occurred in the Archean eon. This impact spherule bed is comprised of iron-rich and dynamically circular impact spherules rims with iridium anamolies. Marble Bar spherule bed provides an incredibly fascinating glimpse into Earth’s earliest history.

Key Features

  • Origin: This spherule bed dates back to the Archean eon and represents one of the last signature remnants of the  deterioration of the late heavy bombardment (LHB). During this period, Earth experienced intense meteorite and asteroid impacts.
  • Composition: The spherules within the Marble Bar bed are silicified and exhibit Fe-rich rims. These rims primarily consist of secondary siderite and contain high nickel (Ni) abundances.
  • Evidence of Impact: The spherule bed is associated with microtektites, microkrystite spherules, and iridium anomalies. It also provides proof of tsunami-induced hydromechanics.

Geological Details: The Marble Bar Spherule Bed offers insights into Earth’s early history, hypervelocity impacts, and the dynamics of impact ejecta. This material is from the Duffer Formation (MBCM), Pilbara, Western Australia. Age: ~3.47 Ga, Archean.

Specimen size: 34mm L X 46mm W X 16mm D. Its front face is smooth, while the back remains rough and dynamic.
