This impact breccia from Vargeão Dome is a great hand specimen that even has some tiny shatter cones in one of its corners. It is an excellent specimen with multiple features.
Brazil has had its fair share of impact craters. There are 7 known impact craters from this South American country. Vargeão Dome is an almost complete circular depression with steep walls and several concentric ring-like features. The impact occurred in the Serra Geral Formation during the early Cretaceous.
Shocked quartz with maskelynite glass, along with shatter cones has set this crater on the list of impact structures on Earth. Shatter cones are found in sandstone and basalt. Vargeão Dome is the largest among the rare impact craters in basaltic targets known on Earth.
