This fantastic, large specimen is from the Isua Greenstone Banded Iron Formation, home to Earth's oldest and best-preserved ancient plate tectonic sequences. Within this captivating region lie pockets of untouched rock formations, providing us with fascinating insights into the early days of our planet.
Dating back approximately 3.8 million years, the Isua Greenstone belt holds a treasure trove of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. In a groundbreaking discovery in 2016, scientists believe they found potential evidence of life in the form of stromatolites. This evidence is still being debated, but the finding could revolutionize our understanding of the origins of life, pushing it back over 4 billion years.
However, the debate around these stromatolite structures has yet to be settled. Skepticism arises as these features can also be explained by geological processes and deformation. Nonetheless, this captivating research continues to challenge our perceptions of early life on Earth.
Specimen size: 106mm L X 70mm W X 44mm D. Weight: 677.86 grams. This specimen was legally obtained.
