White Smoker Pipe Open Core from Ancient Lake Gosiute

This "white smoker" pipe open core originates from a preserved freshwater vent in ancient Lake Gosiute, located in the Green River Eocene, Wyoming. Lake Gosiute is approximately 50 million years old. Some "smokers" contain preserved ostracodes and exhibit calcite crystals. These crystals were the last minerals to precipitate as the lake dried up and fossilized.

Unique Ecosystem

Both "black smokers" and "white smokers" are unique ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth. While they differ in color and elemental composition, white smokers are the cooler temperature cousins of black smokers, releasing cooler water. Freshwater lake vents contain more barium, calcium, and silicon, which give the white smokers their distinctive white "smoke" underwater.
