Discover the Fascinating World of Thunder Eggs
Thunder eggs are geological wonders that captivate collectors and geologists alike with their stunning, colorful interiors. Formed millions of years ago, these unique specimens offer a glimpse into the Earth's volcanic past.
What is a Thunder Egg and How Do They Form?
Thunder eggs near Rockhampton, Mt. Hay in Queensland, were formed around 120 million years ago. A rhyolite shell formed around trapped gas bubbles when the molten lava cooled. This shell cracked, allowing the gases to escape and leaving behind a hollow cavity. Siliceous liquids with minerals and impurities entered the cavity and crystallized, sealing the cracks and forming colorful centers. These centers usually consist of agate, chalcedony, jasper, quartz crystal, or a combination of these minerals. Both "thunderegg" and "thunder egg" are correct spellings and can be used interchangeably.
Rare Volcanic Marvels with Unique Characteristics
These volcanic marvels are rare, found only in a few countries, and known by different names. The term "thunderegg" or "thunder egg" is thought to be of Native American origin, as they believed the thundereggs dropped from the sky during thunderstorms. In Europe, Mt. Hay Thundereggs are known by names such as "Amulet Stone" and "Star Agate." They are similar to agates, yet different.
Unique Features of Mt. Hay Thundereggs
In Australia, the Mt. Hay stones have unique characteristics. When polished on the outside, the partially exposed centers glow if held over a light. Picture #4 shows this specimen's appearance when lighted from the back, revealing its deep inner beauty.
