Steinheim Crater Shatter Cone: Fascinating Form
This shatter cone originates from the Steinheim crater in Germany. It is a large specimen featuring the classic "horsetail patterns" on four sides—front, side, bottom, and back.
Historical Significance
The Steinheim crater, located in the Swabian Alb region of Germany, is a well-preserved impact structure with a diameter of 3.8 kilometers. It was formed approximately 15.1 million years ago. Initially, it was believed to be the same age as the nearby Nördlinger Ries crater, but recent studies suggest it is about 500,000 years younger.
Geological Features
The crater features a central peak, which was initially thought to be volcanic but is now understood to be the result of a rebound effect following the impact. This central uplift is a typical characteristic of complex impact craters.
Specimen Details
Shatter cone size: 165mm H X 121mm W X 83mm. Weight: 985 grams.
This shatter cone boasts terrific color and form, with the typical multi-colored features characteristic of this locality.
