Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt "faux amphibolite" is some of the rarest material in the geological world. This sequence of rocks is located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, Northern Canada and was formerly called Porpoise Cove Greenstone Belt.
In 2017, there was a scientific report published suggesting that there was evidence of fossil microorganisms found in the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt rocks. That would mean that this would be the oldest traces of life ever found on Earth. The dating of the detrital zircons taken from rocks suggest an age of anywhere from 3770-4321 Ma.
This rock is composed of cummingtonite amphibolite. It dominates much of the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt. Sections of this belt are an unusual grayish-beige color as opposed to the customary dark green of regular amphibolites. Consequently it has been given the coined name of "faux-amphibolite". Some of the cummingtonite amphibolites are garnet-rich and are interpreted to mean that the material is highly metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary rocks.
