This is an exceptional, large manganese nodule from the Pacific Ocean floor. These polymetallic nodules are authigenic deposits composed principally of manganese oxides. They are enriched in Fe and Co, Ni, and Cu.

They occur in all the world's oceans but are generally found in areas where sediment accumulation rate is slow. They often form around a core material, such as a shell fragment or something else.
