This is an exceptional, large and dense manganese nodule from the Pacific Ocean floor. It is dynamic and a complete manganese nodule. These polymetallic nodules are authigenic deposits composed principally of manganese oxides. They are enriched in Fe and Co, Ni, Cu and other elements.
They occur in all the world's oceans but are generally found in areas where the sediment accumulation rate is slow. As a result, they often form around a core material, such as a shell fragment or something else.
