This is an exceptional, large manganese nodule from the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, Pacific Ocean floor. The front is dynamic and the complex characteristics of the back help you peer into the interior of a manganese nodule. These polymetallic nodules are authigenic deposits composed principally of manganese oxides. They are enriched in Fe and Co, Ni, Cu and other elements.
They occur in all the world's oceans but are generally found in areas where the sediment accumulation rate is slow. As a result, they often form around a core material, such as a shell fragment or something else.
