Lechatelierite: Rare Meteorite Impact Fulgurite
Fulgurites are not always formed from lightning strikes. In this case, the rare "lechatelierite" was created by a meteorite impact. This specimen was found at the Tenoumer Impact Crater, El Khatt, Mauritania. Formed by high-temperature impact, this material consists of green, brown, reddish, and white hues, with lechatelierite being the main component.
Unique Geological Formation
Lechatelierite does not have a crystal structure, so it is considered a mineraloid. It is classified in the quartz mineral group even though it is not a true mineral. Usually, lechatelierite is formed by a natural process involving lightning and the high-temperature melting of quartz sand, producing fulgurites.
