Kimberlite is the name of a rock formed by eruption of magma that partially melts and intrudes through the crust. Diamonds are not formed in kimberlite, but rather are released from pulverized diamond-bearing mantle rocks during the upward flow of magma. De Beers mining company originally started looking for diamonds in Canada. The name kimberlite is derived from the city of Kimberley, South Africa, where this rock-type was first described, in 1887.

The diamonds contained in kimberlite rocks are older than the kimberlite pipes that contain them. Although diamonds are found at all levels within a kimberlite pipe, they are not always necessarily present.

Only a few kimberlite pipes in the world carry diamonds in commercially worthwhile quantities. Drill cores from kimberlite pipes are certainly interesting and a great addition to a geological collection.

Size of drill core: 63mm diameter; 17mm D; Weight: 121.3 grams. Ships with tag, tag stand and Certificate of Authenticity.  Display base and photo cube not included. It is unknown as to the diamond content of this core, but none are visible with a loupe.

If you do not have a kimberlite drill core for your geological collection, here is a terrific chance to get one from Quebec, Canada.
