This micro slide contains zircon sand made from the sedimentary gneiss from the Jack Hills, Yilgarn craton, Australia. The Jack Hills are located in the Narryer Gneiss Terrane of the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. The zircons from the Jack Hills Erawondoo Hill location have returned an official age of 4.404 billion years, interpreted to be the age of crystallization. Jack Hills zircons are the oldest known terrestrial material on Earth.

Microslide Size: 75mm L X 25mm W X 4mm D, Microslide well size: 24mm Diameter. This zircon sand is securely contained in a brass ring with a microscope cover slip. Therefore, you never have to worry about the material leaking or losing the zircons.

We designed this microscope slide as the best way to contain and observe this valuable material. The Jack Hills Zircon Sand arrives sealed with a coverslip and in a well that is 2.5 mm deep. This microslide is the best way for the grains to study for observation. The well contains about 0.28 grams of premium Jack Hills zircon sand product.

Note: The zircons are best seen with a microscope using 25X to 100X magnification with reflected and/or transmitted light. There is enough room in the well for the material to move about freely. ADDITIONALLY: The Jack Hills red zircons (shown in the image, near black micro-meteorites) are about 50 microns wide. The human eye can only resolve about 50 microns (50 µm), so we recommend using a magnifying glass. A simple, single-lens magnifier will help, but the more expensive double and triple-lens designs will give you a clearer image and a wide in-focus area. You’ll usually find the zircons in the yellow-orangish areas. Hadean Zircons formed in magma 4.4 - 4.0 bya. The Jack Hills Zircon sand sample displays how zircons, eroded from ancient mountains, accumulated with sedimentary sand.
