Hoba Meteorite: The Largest Known Meteorite on Earth
The Hoba meteorite, discovered in 1920 in Namibia, Africa, is the largest known meteorite on Earth. Estimated to have fallen approximately 80,000 years ago, this meteorite is unique because it did not impact the ground at high velocity like most meteorites. Instead, it had a low glide path through the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in a relatively "soft-field" landing by meteoritic standards.
Composition and Origin
Primarily composed of iron with small amounts of nickel and other trace elements, the Hoba meteorite's chemical composition closely resembles other stony-iron meteorites called octahedrites, which are about 90% iron and 8-12% nickel. However, its incredible size and weight set it apart, weighing over 60 tons and measuring approximately three meters long, three meters wide, and one meter thick. Scientists believe the meteorite originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, likely breaking off from a larger asteroid due to a collision and traveling through space for millions of years before impacting Earth.
Accidental Discovery
The Hoba meteorite was discovered accidentally by a farmer plowing his field. Initially mistaking the dark object sticking out of the ground for a tree stump, he soon realized it was something much more extraordinary upon closer inspection.
Scientific and Cultural Significance
Today, the Hoba meteorite is a significant subject of scientific research for those studying the formation of our solar system and the composition of asteroids. It also holds cultural significance for the local community, symbolizing strength and resilience. The meteorite continues to fascinate and captivate people worldwide, making it one of Africa's most significant natural wonders. Its discovery has shed light on the mysteries of our universe and serves as a reminder of its vastness and wonder.
