Glassy Fulgurite Lightning Sand “Icarus”

This fulgurite named  “ Icarus” is a rare, dynamically shaped specimen of glassy fulgurite lightning sand from Italy. Named after the character from Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the labyrinth’s creator, and a skilled craftsman.

The Myth of Icarus

The story of Icarus and Daedalus is a tale of ambition and caution. Attempting to escape Crete, they constructed wings made of feathers and wax. Despite his father’s warning not to fly too close to the Sun, Icarus ignored the advice. His wings melted, leading to his tragic fall into the sea. The phrase, “Don’t fly too close to the Sun” originates from this myth.

Exquisite Features

This fulgurite is beautifully shaped, with a heavily glass-lined interior and sand grains embedded on the back. The edges resemble wing feathers, and the interior, known as “ Black Ice Glass,” mirrors the appearance of black ice formed during winter storms. This half, split-open chamber is among the most exotic geological materials in the world, with melted red grains adding to its incredible form.
