Fulgurite Black Hat [1748] Lightning Sand

This rare fulgurite lightning sand glass tube has a white to light gray body with a "black hat." Only about two in 1,000 fulgurites has such an interesting features. The back has open smooth glass that is easily seen in the images.

Fulgurites are referred to as "fossilized lightning" and were made romantically legendary by the Hollywood movie "Sweet Home, Alabama."

Lightning bolts, when they strike sand or soil and fuse them, are hotter than the temperature of the surface of the Sun. They make remarkable shapes and beautiful glass tubes and shards that are visually appealing. A select few, like this one, are remarkable in shape and color.
