Wolframite is a mineralogically referred to as the "Wolframite Group." While often referred to as a mineral, wolframite consists of intermediate compositions between the minerals ferberite (FeWO4) and hübnerite (MnWO4). The compositions within this series typically range from 20% to 80% Fe-Mn. These minerals are grouped under the "Wolframite Group" and form the Ferberite-Hübnerite Series.

Wolframite is a vital tungsten ore and commonly found oxide containing over 75% WO3. Alongside wolframite, scheelite is another significant tungsten ore. Tungsten is considered a strategic metal. In microscopy, "wolframite" has intermediate compositions that are prevalent. Determining the exact proportions of Fe and Mn requires other analytical methods.

The "Wolframite Group" is commonly found in metamorphic rocks. Ferberite was discovered in 1863 in Spain and named after the mineralogist Moritz Rudolph Ferber. The mineral known as "wolframite" comes from the German term "wolf rahm," which was used by Johan Gottschalk Wallerius in 1747 to describe tungsten. Wallerius adopted this term from the 1546 name "Lupi spuma" by Georg Agricola, which translates to "wolf's froth" or "wolf's cream" in English.

Ferberite Wolframite boasts distinctive physical properties that make it easily recognizable. Its dark black color, high density, and sub-metallic luster characterize it. The mineral exhibits a high degree of hardness, rating between 4.5 and 5 on the Mohs scale, testifying to its resilience. The crystal system of Ferberite Wolframite is monoclinic, exhibiting prismatic crystals that can be tabular in nature. It also possesses a distinct cleavage, and its fracture is uneven to sub-conchoidal. These unique properties contribute to its utility in various applications and its allure to mineral collectors.
