Ensisheim meteorite is considered to be at the top out of almost all the meteorites! It has a rich history as it is often referred to as the Christopher Columbus meteorite because it fell to Earth on November 7, 1492. It is the same year Columbus discovered America. This initial voyage of Columbus helped to change the world.
The Ensisheim meteorite weighed about 280 pounds when it first fell to Earth in a field near the village of Ensisheim, in Alsace, France. A historical woodcut depicted the scene, which shows the fall witnessed by two people emerging from a forest. One of the witnesses led the townspeople to the field, where the Ensisheim meteorite was discovered in a hole 3 feet deep. People kept chipping off pieces as souvenirs until eventually they were ordered to stop, by the town magistrate.
Meteorites are believed to be small fragments of asteroids, broken off and ejected mainly from the asteroid belt. They are about seven hundred million years older than the oldest rocks on Earth, making them, in our brief lifetimes “eternal.”
