This specimen is a portion of a rib from an Edmontosaurus dinosaur that lived 66-57 million years ago. This bone is older than the Chicxulub meteorite impact event that wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs! It was legally collected on private land in the Hell Creek Formation, Harding County, South Dakota.
Size: 6 3/4" L X 1 5/8" W X 7/8" D, Weight: 139.2 grams; Very minimal stabilization; beautiful dinosaur bone specimen, museum grade.
Edmontosaurus lived from about 72 -66 mya, that is until the meteorite impact Chicxulub event that brought an end to the non-avian dinosaurs. They were medium to large framed dinosaurs, ranging from 20 to over 40 feet in length. They had no teeth in the front of their mouths and are commonly referred to as a "duck-billed dinosaur." The predentary bone on the lower jaw and the maxilla on the upper jaw were broad and flat. The front of their skull does closely resemble that of a duck.
All hadrosaurs had hind limbs much longer than their forelimbs. The tail was heavily stiffened by a lattice of ossified ligaments, and the body was normally held with the tail outright and parallel to the ground. The neck, which had more vertebrae than most dinosaurs was long and had a tight U-bend, so that it was vertical when it joined the skull.
Hadrosaurs were ornithischian dinosaurs, fairly closely related to dinosaurs such as Triceratops and Stegosaurus.
This dinosaur was named after the Canadian city of Edmonton, Alberta, meaning "lizard from Edmonton." It was first described, in 1917, by Lawrence Lambe.
Ships with Certificate of Authenticity, information about the Edmontosaurus dinosaur and wooden display stand (not shown, but included) with tag and tag stand.
This Edmontosaurus bone makes a great addition to any fossil or early life scientific collection. Great gift for the young scientist or even the advanced fossil collector.
