Buntsandstein Conglomerate from Rubielos de la Cérida
Discover the unique Buntsandstein conglomerates found in the Rubielos de la Cérida Impact Basin, located in northern Spain. These conglomerates are sporadically scattered across the countryside in this area. They are special because they display shock spallation skid marks across their surface, which are usually easily visible.
Geological Significance
The Rubielos de la Cérida Impact Basin is part of a larger impact crater chain that includes the Azuara impact structure. This basin is an elongated impact structure, approximately 80 kilometers long and 40 kilometers wide. It is characterized by a central uplift and a surrounding basin delineated by a distinctive drainage pattern. The basin features extensive geological formations, including monomictic and polymictic breccias, breccia dikes, and megabreccias. The presence of impact glass and shock metamorphism further supports its impact origin.
Unique Features
Such deformations in rocks can only be attributed to the immense power of a meteorite impact event, causing an overburden of pressure. This type of action leaves behind tell-tale signs of punctuated wear and friction marks, making each cobble unique and a reminder of the power of a meteorite impact.
