The Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa, has made its appearance in geological news because it contains many diverse layers of interesting microspherules. Evidence for a large meteorite impact event has been found adjacent to the Barberton Greenstone Belt. Rated to be 5 times larger than the Chicxulub impact, the evidence for a crater of the age of about 3.26 BYA has yet to be found.

The Barberton Greenstone Belt is where gold was first discovered in South Africa. This Belt was first uniquely identified by Prof Annhauser at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. His work in mapping and detailing the characteristics of the Barberton Greenstone Belt has been used as a guide for other Greenstone Belts around the world. This Greenstone Belt gets its name from the presence of its green colored minerals. Minerals such as chromium muscovite "fuchsite", epidote, green chlorite and serpentine are found in abundance. Other Greenstone Belts have been found in Africa, Asia, Europe, North American, South America and parts of Oceania.

The Barberton Greenstone Belt, Makhonjwa Mountain Range has been referred to as the "Genesis of Life" because it's geology includes the best preserved ancient Archean rocks on Earth. It has been interpreted as deposits of Archean seafloor hydrothermal vents. The entire Barberton Greenstone Belt has been subjected to repeated stages of deformation, resulting in folding, faulting and shearing with appreciable deformation and metamorphism linked to successive granitic intrusions.

This greenstone belt has provided an exceptional geological portal for observing the complex geological environments on the early Earth.
