Cuneiform was a system of writing first developed by one of the first known earliest civilizations in the world, the Sumerians. The region where the Sumerians lived is nowadays referred to as "the fertile crescent" and the "cradle of civilization." The term "fertile crescent" came about because this is where farmers first emerged in known history. They were a people who domesticated plants and modified natural vegetation. With this came the evolution of commerce, with the need to find methods of recording information.

Babylonia was an ancient state and cultural area based in central-southern Mesopotamia. The main language spoken was Akkadian. Sumer is the earliest known civilization of the area, and the people came to be called the Sumerians.

It is thought that at least five spoken languages used the wedge-shaped cuneiform writing as a method of recording laws, transactions, and medical knowledge. As domestication of this area continued there evolved a natural need for teachers, schools, and training.

This round Babylonian school tablet is a cast of a practice tablet made from the original, at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Clay tablets found by archaeologists have only survived because they were baked in kilns, which preserved them. Invading armies burned buildings where the tablets and other things were stored, but nonetheless, they were able to survive the fires and are still found at archaeological sites.

This Sumerian cuneiform writing tablet talks about a "reed basket." On one side of the bottom there is actually an imprint of the student's palm, as clearly as it was made more than 3,000 years ago.

This round Babylonian Sumerian cuneiform school writing tablet reproduction ships with detailed information about the tablet, tag, and large display case. The tag stand and the large display box stand are included.
Large display case size: 8" X 6" X 2".

Size: 2 5/8" diameter X 7/8" D. This is a cast resin reproduction.

Cuneiform writing tablets make a great gift for a teacher, archaeology enthusiast, linguistics enthusiast, or someone who enjoys ancient history. This is a way of imagining "touching hands through time."
