Large Specimen Trinitite Green Black 4.76 gm

This is an unusual, large green Trinitite specimen with minor black and metallic flakes. Trinitite is the glassy residue left on the desert floor after the Trinity atomic bomb test on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This particular specimen was legally collected in 1948.

This large Trinitite is green and black, with metallic flakes.

Varieties of Trinitite

Many different types of Trinitite have been identified, with green being the most common. Black and red Trinitite contain iron from the tower structure. Red varieties also contain copper from the 'gadget' or the communication cables leading away from the test site. The presence of iron in Trinitite is attributed to the steel tower that held the bomb, as well as "Jumbo," the steel canister that housed the device.

The official environment in which Trinitite formed included sand, copper, iron/steel, and indigenous minerals present in the ground during the atomic blast.
