Authentic Apex Chert from Pilbara, Western Australia
Discover the incredible characteristics of this authentic specimen of Apex Chert hails from the Pilbara region in Western Australia. Once at the center of considerable controversy, scientists were uncertain if it actually contained life. However, a groundbreaking scientific paper published in 2018, based on a SIMS analysis of several specimens, confirmed the presence of 11 Archeal microbial fossils. These include two primitive photosynthesizers, two methane consumers, and one methane producer. This discovery solidifies the biogenicity of Apex fossils and the Archean "Tree of Life" in motion around 3.49 Ga.
Connections to Martian Life
Interestingly, the filaments found in Apex Chert resemble structures discovered in ALH 84001, a meteorite from Antarctica believed by some to contain ancient life from Mars. While the debate on life within the meteorite continues, this connection raises the possibility of microfossil life on the Red Planet. The quest for evidence of life on Mars, which began over 20 years ago, is ongoing - probably until there is a completed sample return mission.
Insights into Extraterrestrial Life
Discoveries of Apex Chert and other extraordinary geological specimens provide valuable insights into the potential for life beyond Earth. Scientists are now investigating molecular signatures in exoplanet atmospheres to better understand different life forms that may exist elsewhere in the universe. This is an exhilarating time for new frontiers in science!
