Vargeao Dome impact crater is located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. This shatter cone came from the Serra Geral Formation target rocks. Shatter cones and shocked quartz grains provide evidence for this crater. Visible "horsetailing" on both sides makes this a very interesting specimen. The impact that formed this crater occurred in the early Cretaceous.
What makes this impact particularly important is that it is only one of four impacts that targeted basaltic terrain. Evidence suggests that there was possible hydrothermal activity occurring both before and after the bolide hit. Shatter cones coming from this area do look weathered, and some even "stressed."
Size of specimen: 125mm L X 80mm W X 21mm D. Weight: 189 grams
Ships with Certificate of Authenticity, information about the Vargeao Dome meteorite impact crater, tag and tag stand. Photo cube are not included.
It is noteworthy that due to the proximity of location, age, and stratigraphic similarities of Vista Alegre and Vargeão, it has been proposed that these two impact sites may be the result of a double impact. (We also have suevite from this crater as well.)
This is a rare shatter cone from this very interesting and unique South American meteorite impact site.
