This specimen is impact melt rock from the Dhala impact structure located in India. It is an old crater, estimated to be about 2000 Ma, making it among the top 10 oldest craters on Earth.
The Dhala crater is located in the Archean Bundelkhand craton. Granitoids and impact melt rocks are the dominant clast population in this material. The matrix is purplish pink in color and composed of mica, opaque quartz and rock fragments. The dark portions of the matrix are due to the presence of very fine-grained opaque minerals. Typically these are probably pyroxene crystals, along with probable magnetite or ilmenite.
Size of Specimen: 94mm L X 47mm W X 6mm D, Weight: 42.2 grams. NOTE: All pictures shown wet, with last specimen shown dry.
